Vicuna Art Studio is holding their annual Winter Art Show just in time for the holiday season.
About 60 artists will be taking part in the show, and there will be about 120 pieces for sale.
Marc Sears is one of the artists. He has tourette syndrome and retinitis pigmentosa, losing his vision late in life, now he creates sculptures from memory.
“Some stuff are from memory because I’ve seen it before in real life, some things I have seen on TV when I had sight, and some things are just based on pictures that I print out on the printer,” he said.
His instructor then describes the images to Marc for him to create the sculpture.
Sears’ work often includes a historical context.
“One of them I did really good is called “The Mona Lisa”, but it was originally a painting. And, so I decided to turn the painting into a 3D sculpture of clay and it is displayed at the Maple Ridge library, which is really awesome,” he said.
Sears enjoys using his fingers as tools as the tactile feeling helps him form and shape the details of his pieces.
He is enthused by the creative and versatile qualities of clay and his lively imagination and ambitions are perfect for this medium.
After his sculptures are bisque fired, Sears uses acrylic paints to decorate them, using a broad, flat brush to cover the surfaces.
He creates iconic images that are familiar so his sculptures appeal to everyone.
Sears is excited to showcase his latest creations at the Vicuna Art Studio’s annual Winter Art Show, which will include floral arrangements and sea creature sculptures, and a painting of Santa Claus.
The show will also feature live art demonstrations, seasonal refreshments, and a new collection of art goods designed especially for the holiday season.
“We have almost everything you need for holiday gifting—from one-of-a-kind original artworks and handmade cards to paper lamps, gift boxes, and even gift card holders crafted from original paintings—each offering a unique artistic touch,” said Dhanha Shin, director of the studio.
Vicuna Art Studio is part of Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living. It is a studio devoted to supporting artists with diverse abilities to embrace their individuality, develop their talent, and create inspiring works.
The event takes place Friday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at unit 1, 11491 Kingston St., Maple Ridge.
