Few events bring the community together like Christmas in Pitt Meadows.
An estimated 5,000 people are expected at Spirit Square and the Pitt Meadows Family Recreation Centre (12027 Harris Rd.) for the annual family celebration.
“The holiday season in Pitt Meadows is a time when our community truly shines,” said Mayor Nicole MacDonald. “The Christmas in Pitt Meadows signature event – taking place this year on Dec. 5 from 4 to 8 p.m.—remains one of our most cherished traditions.”
There will be visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus, with an opportunity for photos.
A variety of other characters, like Disney princesses, stroll through the event to interact with kids.
There will be free train rides through the park, which will be decorated as a holiday wonderland.
On the stage will be live entertainment, there will be an artisan market, food trucks, and numerous children’s crafts like decorating cookies, games and activities.
There will be road hockey, and those wanting to play are asked to bring their own stick.
The annual tree lighting ceremony is a highlight, when the giant Christmas evergreen overlooking the square is lit up while the crowd cheers.
“It is a celebration that reflects the heart of who we are – connected, caring and proud to call Pitt Meadows home,” said MacDonald.
”I am grateful to the residents, volunteers, staff, sponsors, artists, local businesses and staff who contribute their time, talent and enthusiasm to make this tradition possible year after year.
“From my family to yours, I wish our entire community a wonderful holiday season.”
Admission is free, and those attending are asked to bring cash for donation-based activities, as well as non-perishable items for the food bank.
On the day of the event, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., the connecting road in Spirit Square from City Hall to the recreation centre will be closed, and the full main parking lot will be closed starting at 1 p.m.
Parking will be limited and only available Recreation Centre underground parking lot and the Pitt Meadows Elementary school parking lot.
Artisan vendor applications are open, volunteers can still register, and sponsorships are needed. See pittmeadows.ca for details
