White Rock woman 1 of 2 people charged in fraud investigation

A White Rock woman is one of two people charged with fraud after a joint investigation.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia’s Joint Illegal Gaming Investigation Team, working in partnership with the Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch, secured fraud charges against two people in connection with an alleged scheme that happened at casinos in Metro Vancouver earlier this year.

JIGIT investigators began a joint investigation in April of this year into reports that fraudulent transactions had taken place at multiple casino locations, a CFSEU release noted.

Investigators learned that over a two-week period between mid-March and early April, approximately $45,000 had been fraudulently obtained, and that one of the suspects was employed at a casino in New Westminster at the time.

Both suspects were arrested in Surrey and in New Westminster on July 23, with assistance from White Rock RCMP and New Westminster Police, the release said.

On Wednesday (Nov. 12), investigators obtained charge approval from the BC Prosecution Service, and unendorsed warrants were issued for both accused;

Yu Ju (Jessica) Lu, 50, of White Rock and Inderjit Singh, 39, of New Westminster have each been charged with one count of Fraud Over $5,000, contrary to Section 380(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Singh turned himself into police on Thursday (Nov. 13), and Lu turned herself in to police on Friday (Nov. 14).

Both were released on conditions and given a future court appearance date.

“This investigation reflects the strong partnership between CFSEU-BC and the Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch in protecting the integrity of British Columbia’s gaming sector” said Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha, media relations officer for CFSEU-BC in the release.

“Through JIGIT, we continue to work collaboratively to identify and disrupt criminal activity in casinos and gaming facilities across the province.”
