A woman has been rescued after severely injuring herself while climbing in Hope.
Hope Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) were on scene late Sunday afternoon, Nov. 9, after the climber injured herself at the Area 71 crag near town. Despite the difficult recovery, due to how steep and rugged the terrain is at this area, Hope SAR said the climber was “stoic despite the severity of the injury.”
“It was a sunny day yesterday, and the area is very close to town, so it can be easy for people to let their guard down,” Hope SAR said via social media. “This group wasn’t complacent and we’d like to acknowledge how smoothly the rescue went as a result.”
The search and rescue is reminding people to be prepared for the worst case scenarios, regardless of weather, as “accidents can happen when you least expect it.” For this incident, Hope SAR said the climber and her party immediately called for help and remained in place until rescuers arrived. The group had also packed extra clothes and provisions.
Hope SAR reminds people that calling search and rescue is free, and to always try to call 911 first in an emergency situation. They also encourage people to call as soon as possible especially as the nights grow longer.
The crag is located northwest of the Highway 7 and Highway 1 interchange. It is one of over a dozen climbing spots in Hope, and features a forest just before the rock outcrop at the highway shoulder.
