UPDATE: 19-year-old identified as victim in fatal Burnaby shooting

A nineteen-year-old is dead after a shooting in Burnaby Wednesday (Nov. 5), homicide police say.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has since released the identity of the victim in Wednesday’s shooting as Connor Sheriff, 19, in an effort to advance the investigation, police said in a second release.

Sheriff, according to the release, was known to police and is “believed to have connections to the drug trade.” Homicide police say that while the investigation is in its early stages, the shooting is believed to be targeted. The release adds there is not believed to be any further risk to the public.

“This was a targeted and brazen shooting in a high-traffic area,” Sgt. Freda Fong said. “Those involved displayed a complete disregard for public safety.”

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team was called to Burnaby around 6:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired near McKay Avenue and Kingsborough Street, according to a release Thursday.

When officers arrived, they found Sheriff.

The release adds that shortly after the shooting, police found a vehicle on fire at Kingsway and Inman Avenue.

Homicide police have now confirmed the burnt vehicle is the suspect vehicle involved in the shooting.

Police are looking for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or CCTV footage either in the area of McKay Avenue and Kingsborough Street or Kingsway and Inman Avenue between 4 and 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.
