No captain? No problem.
With injured defenceman Quinn Hughes among seven players sidelined by injury, the Vancouver Canucks got two goals, including the winner, from Kiefer Sherwood in a 4-3 overtime win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers in NHL action Sunday at Rogers Arena.
Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson also tallied for the Canucks (5-5-0), with goalie Thatcher Demko sharp in making 26 saves. Leon Draisaitl (2) and Jack Roslovic replied for the Oilers (4-5-1), while Calvin Pickard took the loss in goal, stopping 23 shots.
Hughes was reportedly hurt late in a Saturday night game against the Montreal Canadiens and is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Boeser opened the scoring 15:42 into the first period, taking a feed from Evander Kane and backhanding a shot past Pickard for his fourth goal of the year. Boeser has nine goals in his last eight games versus Edmonton.
The Oilers outshot the Canucks 13-8 in the period but could not beat Demko.
Vancouver took a two-goal lead 2:22 into the second period, when Pettersson took a pass from Filip Hronek in the right offensive faceoff circle and ripped a shot past Pickard on the power play.
Midway through the period, the Canucks appeared to take a 3-0 lead when Sherwood rifled a shot past Pickard, but the Oilers successfully challenged the play was offside, as Tyler Myers entered the zone a fraction early.
Edmonton took advantage, when Draisaitl converted a nice stretch pass from Evan Bouchard to make it 2-1 at 16:32.

With 41 seconds left the period, Sherwood scored one that counted, dangling through the Oilers defence and slotting the puck past Pickard to make it 3-1 Vancouver.
Just 1:21 into the third, Roslovic scored his first goal as an Oiler, grabbing the puck after a Myers turnover and beating Demko on the short side.
With 5:30 to play, Vancouver’s Marcus Pettersson took a slashing penalty against Edmonton’s Andrew Mangiapane. Just 27 seconds later, Connor McDavid set up Draisaitl in close and he beat Demko to tie it at 3-3. Draisaitl has seven goals on the year.

In 3-on-3 OT, Sherwood tipped home a Boeser shot at 1:42 for the winner. Sherwood now has six goals on the season.
“We bent but didn’t break,” said Sherwood post-game. “It’s a good two points for us.”
NOTES: Vancouver hosts the New York Rangers Tuesday (7 p.m. start) and then travel to meet the St. Louis Blues on Thursday (5 p.m.)… Boeser added two assists for a three-point night, with Conor Garland also having two helpers for Vancouver… Both teams were 1-for-2 on the power play.
