A 24-year-old man is facing a first-degree murder charge after a 2024 Coquitlam homicide.
Tyrel O’Hearn of Coquitlam was arrested Oct. 17 and the B.C. Prosecution Service laid one count of first-degree murder, according to a news release from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Monday (Oct. 20). Police say O’Hearn remains in custody.
Police said the shooting was gang related and connected to organized crime.
It was on Jan. 6, 2024 that Coquitlam RCMP responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Westwood Street and Glen Drive. Officers found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The victim was a 21-year-old man from Coquitlam.
Police said it was a “brazen shooting near a busy intersection in Coquitlam at a time when there had been an uptick in shootings in the city.”
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the investigation, working with the Coquitlam RCMP, BC Coroners Service and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service.
