Afro Gala celebrates 10th year in Maple Ridge this Saturday

The annual Afro Gala is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Maple Ridge this Saturday night, Feb. 28.

The social event features cultural food, costumes, dancing, music by DJ Big Rich, and awards. The annual Black History Month event is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and culture of the black community in Canada.

“It’s to build a bridge across the racial divides,” said Linda Dozie, who has organized the event with her husband Onyeka Dozie, a member of Maple Ridge city council.

She enjoys in particular seeing young people celebrate their culture with pride, and how what started as a small event has made a difference.

“Try to do something positive in your own little way, and it’ll be a better world,” she said.

The Afro Gala will be held starting with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m., at the Thomas Haney rotunda (23000 116th Avenue).

Dress is formal evening or ethnic attire.
