Man brandishing weapon taken into custody after hours-long standoff in Kelowna

After more than seven hours, police apprehended a man from the Laurentian Heights apartments on Kelglen Crescent on Sunday, Nov. 16.

Cpl. Allison Konsmo said that RCMP responded to a report of a man in crisis brandishing a weapon at about 8 a.m.

“Due to the nature of the call, multiple police officers responded, including the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT). The male’s behaviour was aggressive and threatening, leading to the decision to evacuate his neighbours out of an abundance of caution. ERT proceeded to use various methods to de-escalate the situation,” said Konsmo.

According to a resident, water was shut off to one of the buildings while police, fire and ambulance were on scene.

The resident stated he heard four gas explosions that sent smoke across the parking lot and that the third floor of one of the buildings was evacuated.

A window in one of the buildings was blasted out by police, followed by 15 RCMP in tactical gear circling the area.

Witnesses on scene reported hearing screaming coming from one of the units at midnight, although police didn’t arrive on scene until about 8 a.m.

Police finally placed a man into custody at about 3 p.m. Sunday.

Those who were evacuated were allowed to return home at about 3:30 p.m.
