Yet another overpass hit on Hwy. 1

A truck has hit a highway overpass in Langley for the fourth time in 15 weeks.

An eastbound commercial truck hit the rail crossing located between the new Glover Road overpass and the one at 232 St. on Friday, Nov. 14, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit on Sunday, Nov. 16 in response to a Langley Advance Times query.

“A commercial carrier has acknowledged striking the CPKC [Canadian Pacific Kansas City] Rail overhead along Highway 1 in Langley on the afternoon of Friday, November 14th and has provided their contact information to RCMP,” the statement said.

“Only superficial damage to the overpass was observed. CVSE [the Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement provincial law enforcement agency] has been notified and will follow up accordingly.”

It brings to four the number of confirmed overpass strikes recorded in Langley over the last 15 weeks, two at the rail crossing and two at the 264 St. overpass.

The railway overpass has a 4.4-metre clearance, far less than the minimum 5.2 metres modern standards require.

It is due to be replaced with a new span that allows more headroom.

Langley has had more than its fair share of overpass hits, with the aging Glover Road overpass being hit repeatedly over the years until it was demolished and replaced with a new structure in 2024 as part of the widening of Highway One.
