Man beaten in attempt to rescue New Westminster assault victim: Police

A man was rushed to the hospital after he tried to break up a fight near New Westminster’s River Market on Oct. 30.

The Good Samaritan came to the rescue of a stranger who was allegedly being beaten by a group of people, but the group turned their attention to the man when he intervened, New Westminster police said in a release Monday (Nov. 3).

By the time police arrived, the man was severely beaten and had to be transported to a nearby hospital. Police added his injuries were not life-threatening.

Although the suspects and the initial victim were gone from the scene, the release said bystander reports alleged the group consisted of three men and two women.

Police hope to get in contact with the initial victim, but no one has come forth at this time.

“We understand the other person who was attacked may be shaken and hesitant to come forward,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in the statement.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police have been canvassing the neighbourhood for any CCTV footage and interviewing potential witnesses.

Anyone who witnessed the incidents or has dash-cam footage of Columbia and 8th streets between 8:30 and 9 p.m. on Oct. 30 is asked to contact investigators at 604-525-5411.
