Bertuzzi’s hat trick powers visiting Blackhawks past Canucks 5-2

A third-period outburst sank the Vancouver Canucks.

Tyler Bertuzzi had a hat trick and Spencer Knight made 43 saves, leading the visiting Blackhawks to a 5-2 win over the host Canucks Wednesday at Rogers Arena. All of the goals came in the final period.

Former Canuck Ilya Mikheyev and Connor Bedard also scored for the Blackhawks (6-5-3). The Canucks held a big 45-28 advantage in shots on goal, but Knight was sharp between the pipes. Aatu Räty and Evander Kane scored for Vancouver (7-8-0), with Kevin Lankinen taking the loss, stopping 23 shots.

The first period featured plenty of pace and scoring chances, but no goals were produced. Vancouver held a 14-11 shots on goal advantage after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Canucks looked to have taken the lead at 8:34 when Drew O’Connor poked a loose puck past Knight. But Chicago challenged the play for goaltender interference and were successful, negating the goal.

The Canucks held a 35-19 shots margin after 40 minutes, but neither team could manage a goal.

The Hawks erupted in the third, scoring all five of their goals.

Bertuzzi opened the scoring at 3:06 when a puck went off his skate and behind Lankinen.

He scored again, this time on the power play, from the same spot to the left of Lankinen, converting a pass from Bedard at 6:46.

Mikheyev grabbed a loose puck and beat Lankinen blocker side at 7:39 to make it 3-0. It was Mikheyev’s fourth goal of the year and first in seven games.

Bertuzzi completed his fourth career hat trick at 11:37, slipping home a shot from the right of Lankinen.

Raty scored his first goal of the year at 16:49, beating Knight short side on a 2-on-1. Kane made it interesting at 4-2 with two minutes to play with his third of the year, all in the last two games.

B.C. product Bedard then finished off the scoring into an empty net with 59 seconds to play. It was his first goal in Vancouver.

The Canucks continue their four-game homestand Saturday (7 p.m.) when the Columbus Blue Jackets visit Rogers Arena.

NOTES: Chicago ended an 11-game losing skid against the Canucks… Vancouver forward Conor Garland returned to the lineup after missing three games due to injury… Chicago scored on their only power-play chance, while the Canucks were 0-for-2.
