3 recognized by RCMP for efforts following drowning at Maple Ridge lake

Three youth were recognized by the Ridge Meadows RCMP for their actions following a drowning at Alouette Lake over the summer.

Indiana Gerard, Chloe He, and Sophia Jasemianaasl were given Officer in Charge Certificate of Appreciation awards during a special ceremony at the detachment earlier this week.

The trio were out on the water at Alouette Lake on July 31 when a man was reported to have fallen off their paddle board into the water and did not resurface.

Gerard, He, and Jasemianaasl immediately took actions to help the distressed family members while first responders including, police, firefighters, and search and rescue, who raced to the scene and began searching for the individual.

They also assisted the dive team with BC RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Unit in their search for the man, who was eventually located deceased, and all three returned later to the scene to support the recovery efforts.

“The actions of these three young people exemplify the highest standards of the RCMP,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. Martin Guay, who noted the trio demonstrated attentiveness, composure, and compassion amid a time of crisis.

He said their bravery and calm leadership provided reassurance to the family in a moment of chaos and served as a lifeline.

“They placed the needs of others above their own, and it is individuals like them who strengthen our community and humanity as a whole,” said Guay, adding the Ridge Meadows RCMP is proud to highlight the exceptional dedication, kindness, and heroism that exists within the community.
