BC Wildfire Service improves status of Maple Ridge fire to ‘under control’

The wildfire situation in the Rock Ridge area of Maple Ridge has improved from a status of “held,” to now “under control.”

The City of Maple Ridge reported the BC Wildlife Service updated the status on May 25 at 5 p.m.

The fire was first reported on Friday night at approximately 6:30 p.m, and on Saturday Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue crews continued to work the fire scene throughout the day alongside Wildfire Service crews, to respond to the smoldering ground fire.

The fire was along the interface of the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, and the UBC fire crews continued to monitor the area the next day. It was approximately two kilometers from the main gate of the research forest.

There was no damage to structures, and no report of injuries to the public or firefighters.

The fire is deemed human caused, and the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is investigating the cause.

The public is asked to avoid areas marked closed and to follow all posted signage and directions from crews working in the area.

As temperatures rise and wildfire risk increases, the city reminds the public to practice fire safety:

• Follow all fire restrictions and closures.

• Avoid activities that could create sparks.

• Stay out of areas marked closed and obey posted signage.
