Maple Ridge wildfire considered ‘held’

The wildfire in the Rock Ridge area of Maple Ridge is now at a status of “held.”

The City of Maple Ridge reported success in containing the blaze at 10:15 p.m. on Saturday night, May 23.

On Saturday, Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue crews continued to work the fire scene throughout the day alongside BC Wildfire Service crews, to respond to the smoldering ground fire.

The fire was along the interface of the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest, and the UBC fire crews continued to monitor the area the next day.

The fire was not a threat to structures, and no injuries to the public or firefighters was reported.

BC Wildfire Service will provide a final assessment of the fire site during the week.

The public is asked to avoid areas marked closed and to follow all posted signage and directions from crews working in the area.

The city was asked why an emergency alert was not issued during this incident. At no time did the fire pose an immediate danger to public safety or nearby properties that would require an emergency alert.
