IIO investigates after suspect injured in Langley

B.C.’s police watchdog is looking into an incident that saw one man taken to hospital after an arrest by Langley RCMP last week.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) announced on Sunday, May 24, that it is examining the case.

According to the IIO’s statement, Langley officers were called to the scene of a suspected domestic dispute in the 4200-block of 208 Street at around 11:20 p.m. on Friday, May 22.

Police found the man who they had been called about and arrested him. During the arrest, the man sustained what the IIO described as a “serious but not life-threatening injury.”

He was taken to hospital for treatment, and the IIO was alerted shortly afterward.

The IIO investigates every incident in which someone dies or suffers serious harm that is linked to any kind of police action or inaction.

At the end of the investigation, the IIO’s chief civilian director puts out a report saying whether there are reasonable grounds to believe a police officer committed a crime or not.

In most cases, the IIO does not find there was a likely crime, but if the agency does, the director can forward the report to B.C.’s Crown Prosecution Service, which decides whether or not to lay charges against officers.
