Man charged in Vancouver vehicle-ramming incident, senior still in hospital

A man is facing charges after a vehicle-ramming incident in Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood that has left a senior in hospital days later.

Tadd Bali, 34, is charged with four counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, Vancouver police said Tuesday (May 19). Bali remains in custody.

Police say he has “extensive interactions” with police in B.C. and Saskatchewan.

The vehicle-ramming happened on May 15 in the West End. The suspect vehicle was allegedly driving erratically in the area of Comox and Broughton streets, hitting numerous objects, including the Nelson Park dog area.

Vancouver police said at the time that several people had to scramble to get out of the way of the suspect’s vehicle.

A senior, who was riding a motorized scooter at the time, was unable to get out of the way of the driver. He was taken to hospital with injuries.

The suspect was eventually stopped after he rammed a police vehicle that was responding to the incident, destroying the police cruiser and flipping the suspect’s vehicle. Some officers were injured during the incident.

Police said the suspect was trapped inside the vehicle. Multiple ambulances and Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responded and they were able to free the suspect from the vehicle.

He was arrested near Comox and Bute streets.

The injured senior remains in the hospital in serious condition, police said Tuesday (May 19).

Both injured Vancouver Police Department officers, including one recruit constable who was on his second day of work at the time of the vehicle ramming, were released from hospital on the same day.

Police say the investigation is continuing, and anyone with video footage is asked to contact the department’s major crimes unit at 604-717-2500.
