Maple Ridge Ramblers wrestlers win medals at national championships

Two wrestlers from the Maple Ridge Secondary program won medals at the national championships.

The event was held in Grande Prairie, Alta. in late April, and featured more than 700 athletes from across the country.

Tyson Deane-Freeman, Grade 11, took silver in the Greco Roman competition, which is a traditional wrestling style that does not allow wrestlers to attack their opponent’s legs.

He cruised through to the finals in a bracket with 10 competitors, and came up against his club wrestling teammate and practice partner Jeremy Lynch in the final. Deane-Freeman said they know each other’s tactics well, and the match could have gone either way, but he lost a close contest by two points.

In the freestyle wrestling competition, Deane-Freeman took fourth. It was the fourth time he has competed at nationals, and the first time he did not.

Maya Shylov won bronze in the women’s wrestling freestyle event, and it was the Grade 9 wrestler’s first time at nationals.

She had a good season, and also took third at the Fraser North championships, and qualified for the provincials.

Ramblers coach Kevin Menic said she is one of the up-and-coming girls on a team that regularly produces provincial and even national champions.
