LETTER: Miss Whonnock’s tree bridge

Dear Editor,

[Re: New bridge flies into place at Maple Ridge park, Feb. 14, www.mapleridgenews.com]

I saw the story of the bridge being air lifted in Kanaka park.

There was once a very large fallen tree at the foot of Ferguson in Whonnock, that crossed Kanaka Creek and locals used it as a foot bridge.

I was disappointed when they removed it, and contacted the parks people.

The reason, they stated, was it was a danger for possible flooding – although, that tree had been there for years with no adverse effects.

Someone put a short stairway up to ease access to the log, and I think that caught the authorities eye and the tree was removed shortly after that.

If you walk the trails in the park, you will see more than one fallen tree across the creek and they don’t seem to be in any rush to remove them since they are not on a trail.

It would be nice if they gave access at Ferguson to the west side of the creek, since we lost that tree.

Probably wouldn’t need to be flown in.
