Maple Ridge council asked to support 125th anniversary of Country Fest

Country Fest turns 125 years old this year, and Maple Ridge city council has been asked for some extra funding to celebrate the milestone anniversary on July 24 to 26.

Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Country Fest manager Graham Vanstone appeared before council on Tuesday, Feb. 17 to talk about some new initiatives this year, and ask council for an extra $19,750 to make the event more special.

“It’s truly remarkable for any community organization to reach this milestone,” Vanstone told council.

“We’re gonna party like it’s 1901.”

The city has given the fair $17,000 per year in operating funds since 2015, and the agriculture association asked that this amount also be increased by two per cent to $17,340. The additional $19,750 that has been requested would be one-time funding to mark the special anniversary. Pitt Meadows has also supported Country Fest with $3,000 per year.

The city also gives Country Fest approximately $40,000 worth of waived fees for facility and site rentals, and the use of city equipment, noted city staff.

An agricultural fair has been hosted in the city by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Agriculture Association since the group formed on June 15, 1901. It has evolved over the years to reflect the changing city, and it brings together rural and urban people in an entertaining atmosphere, showcases 4-H clubs, and highlights the value of agriculture to the economy, said the staff presentation.

Vanstone noted the additional funding will support:

• A 125 Years of the Fair special exhibit.

• Enhanced 4-H programming.

• Community entertainment and activities.

• Performances of the RCMP Musical Ride on Aug. 12 and 13.

“We encourage the entire community to come out and celebrate with us, on this historic milestone,” he said.

Mayor Dan Ruimy called council’s decision a “no-brainer,” given the crowds of people that attend, and the monumental occasion.

“For me it’s an easy one to support.”

Council will make a final decision on the funding requests at their next council meeting.
