IN OUR VIEW: Family Day just the break we need

Family Day is coming up Monday, Feb. 16, and we hope you all have something planned with those close to you.

Family Day is a civic holiday, and there are no major traditions tied to the annual extra day off in February.

So why a holiday now?

Ostensibly, it’s exactly what it says – it’s about strengthening family values, and giving people time to spend with their loved ones.

The other reason, however, is that by late February, Canadians deserve a bit of a break. At this time of year, the weather is usually bad. The nights are long, and daylight is in short supply.

So we suggest you celebrate Family Day in whichever spirit suits you best.

Your local rec centres, libraries, pools, and community museums are likely to be hosting some fun family events. It’s a nice time of year to go for a walk in one of our many parks.

There are as many ways to celebrate Family Day as there are families. You can go out for chicken nuggets or a five-course meal. You can play board games or hit the movie theatre. You can make plans with your whole clan, just your spouse, or a found family of close friends.

The other way to celebrate Family Day? Just veg out.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating this holiday by staying in your pyjamas all day, watching guilty-pleasures shows, and ordering takeout.

However you celebrate Family Day, it marks an important turning point in the year.

Winter is almost over. Spring will soon be here, with cherry blossoms and tulips sprouting up all over the place.

Happy Family Day, however you choose to celebrate.
