B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a warning about high stream flows following a storm that saw heavy rains across the Lower Mainland.
Rivers and waterways are either running high or are standing at high levels, said the City of Maple Ridge in a press release, warning these high levels can cause hazardous conditions.
High stream flows as a result of the storm can be expected into the weekend, with further rain in the forecast.
Significant flooding is not anticipated.
However, the city is advising that localized flooding, rising river levels, washouts and hazardous driving conditions are possible.
City crews are inspecting and preparing city infrastructure like drainage systems, culverts and pump stations, monitoring conditions closely and are ready to respond as needed, said the city.
To stay safe, the city is asking residents: not to walk, cycle, or drive through flooded areas; to drive carefully and give yourself more time to travel; to be cautious near rivers and trail and to keep children close and pets on a leash; to stay clear of fast-flowing rivers, creeks, and potentially unstable riverbanks; and to check on neighbours or vulnerable residents who might need help.
