Wind warning: Special weather statement in effect for Lower Mainland

Better batten down the hatches … or, at least, ensure loose patio furniture covers are not potential hazards.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver Monday night into Tuesday morning (April 6-7), including Surrey, White Rock, Delta, and Langley as well as the rest of the Lower Mainland.

Strong and gusty westerly winds up to 70 km/h are expected starting tonight, due to a “vigorous cold front” that will cross B.C.’s South Coast, the federal agency said Monday (April 6).

The windy weather may toss loose objects around and break tree branches, and local utility outages are possible, Environment Canada cautioned in the statement.

In November of 2024, damage from a patio furniture cover resulted in a power outage for nearly 14,000 customers in White Rock and South Surrey, according to BC Hydro.

The winds are forecast to ease Tuesday morning (April 7).
