A White Rock hospital is set for its 10th maternity diversion since December — this time, while a maternity diversion is also in place for Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge.
While the ‘temporary’ maternity diversions have been happening since December of last year at Peace Arch and Ridge Meadows hospitals, they have previously, only happened at one hospital at a time.
This time, Peace Arch Hospital’s maternity will shutter starting Tuesday, April 7 at 8 a.m. and go until Tuesday, April 14 at 8 a.m., while Ridge Meadows’ maternity is still on diversion until 8 a.m. Friday, April 10.
Expecting parents in South Surrey, White Rock and Maple Ridge “may be guided to another maternity site to deliver their baby,” according to a Fraser Health website.
Maternity diversions have been happening at both Peace Arch and Ridge Meadows hospitals since last December due to a ‘temporary’ shortage of obstetrician-gynecologists, according to Fraser Health.
Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of B.C. president Dr. Chelsea Elwood said the entire province is “absolutely” in a crisis when it comes to obstetrical and gynecological services, but B.C.’s health minister Josie Osborne has declined answering whether the ongoing diversions constitute a crisis.
Maternity diversions at Peace Arch Hospital since Dec. 7, 2025 include:
• Dec. 7 to 10, 2025
• Dec. 22 to 25, 2025
• Dec. 29, 2025, to Jan. 1, 2026
