Canada’s 7th Most Wanted Arrested in Surrey, B.C.

One of Canada’s most wanted fugitives was arrested by police in Surrey, B.C. on March 26.

Officers from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia(CFSEU-BC) Uniform Gang Enforcement Team (UGET) were conducting “proactive patrols” in Surrey when they saw and identified Chad Dandan and arrested him.

Dandan is wanted in connection with a 2024 homicide in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was 7th on Canada’s most wanted wanted Be on the lookout (BOLO) program.

“The suspect took deliberate steps to avoid being recognized, but our officers’ training and vigilance led to his arrest,” said Sgt. Sarbjit K. Sangha, CFSEU-BC Media Relations Officer. “This is a strong example of the work our members do every day to enhance public safety.”

CFSEU-BC is working with the Winnipeg Police Service “to coordinate the accused’s custody and support the next steps in the judicial process,” noted a CFSEU-BC news release Saturday.

Dandan has been flown back to Winnipeg and remains in custody, according to Winnipeg Police. He is charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and extortion.

On Sept. 10, 2024, police in Winnipeg responded to a call in the 300 block of Bridge Lake Drive about a man who had been abducted the day before.

Three days later, on Sept. 13, the missing man’s body was located in the early morning hours in a home in the 100 block of Bristol Avenue. Police identified the victim as Zeyad Shammo, 22, of Ontario.

Two other individuals have also been charged in connection to Shammo’s death. Sonny Balemba and Robert James Chaykowski have been charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and extortion. Chaykowski has also been charged with four counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Maxime Langlois, Director of the BOLO Program, said, “Hats off to all Canadians for being on the lookout for Chad Dandan. Hats off to the Winnipeg Police Service for working tirelessly to bring Dandan to justice. And hats off to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, British Columbia for arresting Dandan last week. Together, we make our communities safer.”
