April 1 marks the first day the cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows each have their own RCMP detachments, after the de-integration of the combined Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment.
“On behalf of city council, we are proud to see this important evolution in policing for our community,” said Pitt Meadows Mayor Nicole MacDonald.”
“The establishment of two autonomous detachments marks a significant step forward, allowing for more dedicated resources, enhanced local oversight and a stronger focus for each community. This transition supports more responsive, effective policing services that are better aligned with the unique needs and priorities of Pitt Meadows – helping to build a safer, more connected community for years to come.”
The change comes after a long process that began in 2019, when former Pitt Meadows Mayor Bill Dingwall and his council pursued an autonomous detachment. Dingwall had a 36-year career in the RCMP, retiring as a chief superintendent at the executive level.
The provincial government approved the de-integration in 2021, and there has been extensive planning, risk assessment, and validation processes to ensure both detachments are fully operational and capable of delivering appropriate and effective levels of policing in line with their respective Police Service Agreements, said the RCMP in a statement.
“I want to assure the residents of Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the Katzie First Nation that the RCMP’s Lower Mainland District will continue to provide support to both detachments as they begin policing autonomously in their communities,” said Assistant Commissioner Elija Rain, RCMP’s Lower Mainland District Commander.
She added the Lower Mainland District Integrated Teams operations in vehicle collision analysis, police dog services, tactical teams, forensic identification and homicide investigations remain in place and will continue without disruption.
“We congratulate the City of Pitt Meadows as they move forward independently with their own RCMP detachment,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy. “With the transition now complete, Maple Ridge moves forward with a dedicated Maple Ridge RCMP presence focused on the needs of our community, and residents can be assured they will continue to receive the same high standard of professional policing services.”
In the event of an emergency, the public should continue to call 9-1-1.
The newly constructed Pitt Meadows RCMP detachment is at 12486 Harris Rd., and the non-emergency line is 778-670-9010.
The building is substantially complete, but is not yet open to the public.
Front counter police services are available at the Community Policing Office located behind City Hall at 104-12027 Harris Rd. The public will be notified once front counter services transfer to the new detachment.
A public open house is being planned for fall 2026, where community members can meet the officers and staff at their new facility.
The former Ridge Meadows Detachment facility has been renamed as the Maple Ridge RCMP Detachment, and will retain the same non-emergency line: 604-463-6251.
