Traffic enforcement nabs impaired drivers in Maple Ridge

With an allegedly impaired driver crashing through a fence, another caught fleeing, and another driver clocked at more than 100 km/h over the speed limit, it was a busy weekend of traffic enforcement for the Ridge Meadows RCMP.

On Friday evening, March 27, frontline officers were notified of a vehicle crashing through a curb and fencing at Garibaldi Secondary School. No injuries were reported.

The driver failed a roadside screening test, so their vehicle was impounded, and a notice of driving prohibition was issued.

Later that same evening, officers responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into a ditch, and the driver fleeing on foot, in the Princess Street area. Officers eventually located the driver and again demanded a roadside test, which the driver promptly failed, say police. The driver was arrested for public intoxication before being transported to cells.

On Saturday morning, officers with the Ridge Meadows detachment’s Road Safety Target Team (RSTT) conducted proactive speed and impaired enforcement across the city. Four excessive speed violation tickets were issued, including for one vehicle clocked at 165 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

Two more roadside prohibitions were also issued to drivers for impairment, and a criminal code impaired investigation was also started after a separate traffic stop involving a driver with a history of impaired driving.

The traffic safety team also conducted enforcement on Sunday evening, and issued an excessive speed ticket and 90-day prohibition on the Golden Ears bridge, and another 30-day prohibition on a driver during checks outside liquor establishments.

A prohibited driver was also stopped during these checks, resulting in a vehicle impoundment and further court appearance notice.

Ridge Meadows RCMP remains committed to proactive road safety enforcement, focusing on reducing high-risk collisions and ensuring all road users are kept safe.
