A school bus carrying elementary students tipped onto its side Monday afternoon (March 30) near Barkerville Highway, sending several to hospital with minor injuries.
According to a press release from School District 28 (SD 28), emergency crews responded around 2:40 p.m. to a single-vehicle school bus incident involving bus #45, which was transporting students home from Barlow Creek Elementary. The bus tipped onto its side at the edge of Barkerville Highway.
Initially, no injuries were reported to the RCMP at the scene. However, as a precaution, several students and the driver were later taken to hospital with minor injuries.
A second bus was dispatched to transport the remaining students, all of whom returned safely to their families.
“Thankfully, bus incidents like this are rare, and they can understandably be a scary event for students, families and staff,” Dan Lowndes, SD 28 superindent, said in the release.
“Extra counselling support will be available at Barlow Creek school on Tuesday morning, and the district will be responsive to student and family needs as much as possible.”
