It’s not too late to get a submission into the Earth Day photo and poetry contests.
The contest deadline has been extended until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 5.
This year the theme for Earth Day in Maple Ridge is “reConnect” – inspired by an inspirational quote from African American theologian and civil rights leader Howard Thurman: “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” The theme encourages people to reach out and reconnect with others, or places, or activities that they love.
There are three categories for each contest. Children aged 10 and younger, youth aged 11-16, and adults 17 years and older. For the poetry contest, poems must be 350 words or less. Winners may be asked to present their work at the Earth Day Welcoming Ceremonies on Saturday, April 18.
All photo entries will be posted on the Celebrate Earth Day Facebook page and will be open for public voting from April 7-14.
Winners will be announced and awarded at the Earth Day Welcoming Ceremonies.
Volunteers are still needed for the event.
Those under the age of 18 require parental consent to volunteer and those under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of their shift.
A volunteer training session will be taking place from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, April 17, at the Gold Creek Room at the Maple Ridge Leisure Center, at 11925 Haney Pl., Maple Ridge.
