Police in Surrey investigate shooting believed to be extortion-related

A home and a vehicle in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood were damaged in an early-morning shooting Monday.

Surrey Police Service is investigating after attending a home in the 12300-block of 77A Avenue Monday (March 30) around 1:45 a.m. for a shots fired report.

SPS officer observed damage to a home and an unoccupied vehicle that was parked out front; fortunately, none of the occupants of the home were injured, SPS said in a release.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing with Major Crime Section, Integrated Forensic Identification Services, and Project Assurance officers now involved, SPS said, adding it is believed that this incident is connected to extortion.

As of Monday (March 30), there have been 73 reported extortions in Surrey, 14 shots fired incidents and and two arsons related to extortion, and at least 35 extortion victims (23 repeat).
