Applications are open for two $2,500 scholarships available for students in British Columbia and Yukon.
Interchange Recycling, a not-for-profit organization formed in 2003, responsible for collecting and recycling used motor oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze, and antifreeze containers in BC and Yukon, is behind the second annual “The Tomorrow Grant” to support students pursuing environmental studies and automotive trades in British Columbia and Yukon.
Addyson Murphy of Maple Ridge is now studying Environmental Science at Simon Fraser University after receiving a scholarship last year. Murphy said the money helped her with school costs and encouraged her to keep pursuing work that protects B.C. ‘s ecosystems.
“Knowing there are organizations that value environmental protection meant a lot,” said Murphy.
One $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing an Environmental Studies program at an accredited BC or Yukon University or College, and the other scholarship to a student entering an Automotive Trades program through Trades Training BC or an eligible Yukon institution.
The goal of the scholarships is to support skills that contribute to environmental stewardship, said Jenn Robson, director of operations at Interchange Recycling.
“Environmental stewardship is an ongoing responsibility,” said Robson.
“Through The Tomorrow Grant, we’re supporting students who are choosing paths where their decisions and work will have real-world impact. It’s encouraging to see that level of commitment, and we’re proud to help them take the next step.”
Canada’s automotive sector continues to evolve, with advancing technologies and rising sustainability standards shaping environmental expectations and workforce needs, added Robson, noting there is growing focus on preparing the next generation of environmental professionals and skilled tradespeople who will contribute to more sustainable practices and responsible resource management across their respective fields.
Applications are open until July 15, and the recipients will be announced on July 31.
