Maple Ridge Mounties were asking the public to stay away from Haney Place Mall Thursday morning.

In a social media feed about 6 a.m., Ridge Meadows RCMP say their handling a police incident at the indoor mall located at Lougheed Highway, between 224 and 226 Street.

“The public is asked to avoid this area until further notice,” they posted.

Then, about 9 a.m. they followed up and said: “The public is asked to continue to avoid this immediate area, as officers investigate. Parking is affected however city facilities, transit services, and businesses in the area are not impacted.”

Meanwhile, one of the mall tenants is contradicting the police statement.

Town Square Cobbler posted on Facebook that they are open today “in spite of police tape set up at the Haney Place Mall.”

They said people are just restricted from entering at the back of the building, by the bus loop.

“All the other doors to the mall are open,” they posted.

Someone else jposted a warning for drivers: “Just reroute to avoid the mall entirely, it’s chaos,” said Jeislie Marie Everett.
