LETTER: A few points of clarification

Dear Editor,

[RE: Council wastes money on trees, March 20, The News]

I agree with Ann [Hayes] that property taxes are high. However, I found some inaccuracies regarding the trees being planted and our newish Maple Ridge recycling program.

I did some research on the trees being planted around Maple Ridge, and according to the city’s website, it’s 1,000 trees (not 10,000) and it’s partly funded by the federal government. Trees not only bring beauty, but eventually at full size, some much needed shade.

And to her other point regarding garbage/recycling: Yes, it has been a learning curve with the new recycling program during the past year, but this new recycling program (starting in January 2025) is now fully funded by private businesses and companies that create the product packaging we are recycling.

Last year, recycling was taken off our property taxes – we no longer pay property taxes for recycling.

As for garbage collection: Yes, it is different than other municipalities. But, I like my garbage company, which probably charges a lot less than the city would if they took it on.
