City of Maple Ridge receives 115 storm-related calls following last week’s rainfall

City of Maple Ridge is advising residents that crews are actively engaged in clean-up and repairs following the heavy rainfall weather event last week.

The storm period that lasted from March 15 to 20 included a yellow-orange heavy rainfall warnings Environment and Climate Change Canada and High Streamflow to Flood Watch advisories issued by the BC River Forecast Centre.

The city said they responded to around 115 storm-related calls about: clearing debris from roads, ditches, and drainage systems; repairing damaged road shoulders, potholes, and other infrastructure; and addressing downed trees and impacts to parks and trails.

They also distributed around 1,200 sandbags at the Operations Centre, as well as delivering two truckloads of sand and sandbags to Maple Ridge Park.

During the weather event, crews did respond to localized flooding on several roads including: 224 Street between 132Avenue and 144 Avenue; 136 Avenue between Foreman Drive and 223 Street; 132 Avenue between 220 Street and 224 Street.

Residents who were impacted by the storm and undergoing cleanup are being reminded to remove standing water and dispose of damaged materials; to clean and disinfect affected areas to prevent mold; and to use caution when re-entering impacted spaces due to hidden hazards.

While the city is working out the details with the province’s Emergency Management and Climate Readiness on eligibility for Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA), they are advising residents who were impacted by the storm to: contact their insurance provider; to document damage with photos and notes; keep receipts for cleanup and repairs; and to report flood-related damage to the City at: MapleRidge.ca/Report.

Residents are also advised to access mental health services, support lines and Canadian Red Cross support programs.

To prepare for future events, the city is encouraging residents to check local floodplain maps and understand flood risks; to clear gutters, drains, and catch basins; and to review the household emergency plan including for pets, farms, and livestock.
