Player registration is now open for the Joint Forces Jamboree in May.
The third annual event, is a memorial tournament in honour of the late RCMP Const. Rick O’Brien, who was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 22, 2023.
It is a full day of ball hockey competition bringing youth and first responders together on the same teams to break down barriers and create a space where children see the humans behind the uniforms.
The event will also feature a kids zone with inflatables, games, and face painting. Attendees can also meet first responders at the First Responder Zone, where they can explore exhibits, vehicles, and gear demonstrations.
There will also be a toddler arena, a fire escape obstacle course, a ninja warrior obstacle course, laser tag, and more.
In addition, a silent auction will be taking place and food trucks will be on site.
Const. O’Brien, 51, was fatally shot while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam, as part of a drug investigation.
The Cst. Rick O’Brien Joint Forces Foundation was established soon after with a mission to foster understanding, trust, and collaboration between youth and law enforcement through meaningful and inclusive programs, activities and events.
“Rick believed strongly in meeting youth where they are,” said Rick’s widow Nicole O’Brien, founder of the Joint Forces Foundation.
“The Jamboree reflects that vision by creating an environment where youth and first responders can connect through sport, teamwork, and community.”
The Jamboree is open to youth of all abilities and backgrounds, with participants ages 6–18 years, and all skill levels encouraged to take part.
Fans can also cheer on the incredible athletes of Special Olympics BC.
Spots are filling quickly for player registration.
The event is free and open to the public.
