LETTER: Stand together against tyrants

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my concern for why my conservative MLA here in Maple Ridge won’t speak out against Donald Trump and his racist and anti-democratic tactics.

My dad fought in the Second World War and was wounded and sacrificed tremendously for our country. Standing up for our Canadian beliefs means a lot to me.

I understand that he is probably trying not to offend some of his constituents who are Trump supporters, but there are times when all of us must take a stand against racism and anti-democratic behaviours.

I am studying the history of Hitler’s rise to power and trying to understand why millions of German’s supported his rise to power.

I am reading Hannah Arendt’s book, “The Origins of Totalitarianism,” which addresses this very question of why people go along with tyrants.

This brings me to the question of why so many of our citizen’s here in Canada support a very sick man like Trump, whose polices are very similar to Hitler’s in his rise to power in Germany.

For instance, Hitler used young lawyers to try and circumvent the human rights laws of his times. Hitler targeted and scapegoated a minority of the population in Germany, i.e. the Jews etc. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Well, it certainly does to me, and I feel that we has citizen’s in a democratically run country need to stand up against this tyrant and his sycophants who are carrying out his orders.

Please let us stand strong for our country and its values of true democracy.

Canada Strong and Free, that’s my country!

John E. McKenzie, Maple Ridge
