BC Hydro releasing more water down Alouette River in Maple Ridge on Friday

Due to ongoing heavy rainfall and elevated reservoir levels, BC Hydro is planning to conduct a controlled release at Alouette Dam to manage reservoir capacity.

The release started at 6 a.m. on Friday, March 20. Updates will be provided if conditions change.

A controlled release (spill) is a routine and necessary operation to safely manage reservoir capacity. While this is not an emergency, it will result in higher river levels and faster-moving water downstream, particularly along the South Alouette River.

Flooding is already occurring in low lying areas along the North Alouette River and is expected to expand to areas along the South Alouette River beginning early Friday. Conditions may change quickly.

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a flood watch. River levels are rising and may reach or overtop banks

Environment Canada has issued an Orange Rainfall Warning meaning heavy and sustained rainfall is increasing the risk of localized flooding, rising rivers, and rapidly changing conditions.

Residents in flood-prone areas below the dam along the South Alouette River are strongly advised to prepare for potential flooding, including the possibility of evacuation.

The city advises:

• Check if you live in a flood-risk area by viewing the city’s floodplain map MapleRidge.ca/Flood. If flooding is likely in your area, plan and take precautions to minimize damage to your home

• Use sandbags to divert water away from buildings, garages, and entry points to significantly reduce flood damage. Sand and sandbags are available at:

• Filled sandbags: City Operations Centre (23925 Dewdney Trunk Rd.).

• Sand and empty bags: Maple Ridge Park (13180 232 Street), bring your own shovel.

• Monitor changing weather and local river conditions closely.

• Do not drive through flooded roads or closures. Driving through water can increase risk of damage to nearby properties and poses serious safety risks.

• Stay away from rivers, creeks during and after stormy conditions due to unstable banks. Keep children and pets safe around fast-moving waters.

• Ensure your emergency plan and supplies are adequate to cover your family, your pets, and your livestock’s needs

• Be ready for potential utility outages (power, gas and communications).

• Consult with an insurance agent about flood insurance for your home and business.

• Pre-register for Provincial Emergency Support Services.

If conditions worsen, evacuation notices may be issued. Be ready to leave on short notice.

The city’s Emergency Operations Centre has been activated, and response plan includes:

• Patrolling and maintaining dykes and pump stations, clearing catch basins, culverts, and flushing storm mains to improve water flow during heavy rainfall.

• Using the city’s FlowWorks network of gauges and hydrological sensors to monitor water levels in coordination with provincial and federal agencies.

• Liaison with provincial and federal agencies to coordinate emergency planning and response efforts.
