Season ends with a ‘golden sweep’ for Maple Ridge synchro skating team

Maple Ridge’s synchronized skating teams are looking back on a great season of competition, which included three gold medals in their last skate of the year.

The Ice Symmetrix juvenile and pre-novice teams attended the 2026 Mountain Regional Synchronized Skating Championship in Spruce Grove, Alberta, at the end of January. They achieved their highest results at the competition since the synchro program had been re-launched from scratch at the club in 2023.

The competition brought together many great teams from across B.C. and Alberta, and the juvenile team put out two fierce performances to the soundtrack of Shrek the movie, placing fourth of eight teams in their category, just missing the podium by 0.72 points.

The pre-novice team delivered two Mamma-Mia themed programs from the heart, and also came in fourth place of eight teams, with a new personal best score.

That same weekend, the STAR 4 team attended the 2026 Winterskate Championship hosted by the BC/YT Section in Cloverdale. The team skated their Zootopia-themed routine with passion and took home their second gold medal of the season!

The athletes regrouped back in Maple Ridge for three weeks of training before their final competition of the season.

“They were motivated and focused on achieving great results at the 2026 West Coast Challenge competition in Aldergrove on Feb. 21,” said head coach of Ice Symmetrix Maddie Wasmuth.

After a full day of competition, their hard work, dedication and passion paid off, she said. All three of the teams put out their best performances to date, bringing home three gold medals for the club. It was a clean sweep for Ice Symmetrix from the Maple Ridge Skating Club.

“We had already been achieving amazing results this season, but to top it off with a golden sweep was the kind of storybook ending a coach can only dream about,” said Wasmuth.

The STAR 4 team earned the distinction of being undefeated in the 2025/2026 season, while the juvenile and pre-novice teams both delivered performances worthy of two new personal best scores for Ice Symmetrix.
