Teacher allegedly injured by student at Williams Lake secondary school

A suspect is in custody after an assault on a teacher at Columneetza Junior Secondary School on Thursday, March 12.

Williams Lake RCMP responded to the unfolding incident at 11:15 a.m. Thursday morning.

According to the RCMP, a 15-year-old male reportedly injured a staff member before being apprehended by other school staff.

After arrival, the youth was taken into police custody and the school was placed on a temporary hold and secure. The RCMP noted this was a temporary measure and they have no evidence to suggest there are any additional suspects at this time.

“I want to be clear that the students and staff are now safe,” Williams Lake RCMP S. Sgt. Brad McKinnon said. “The hold and secure was a safety precaution and lifted shortly after the suspect was removed from the school. The investigation is in its infancy and we have no information to suggest motive at this time.”

Only one person suffered minor injuries and has received medical attention. No other injuries were reported to police.

School District 27 superintendent Cheryl Lenardon sent a message to parents Thursday afternoon informing them of the incident. She noted that all district threat-risk-assessment procedures were followed during this time, which was why the hold and secure was put in place.

“We want to thank our students and staff for responding calmly and following all procedures as trained,” Lenardon said. “We will have support available at the school tomorrow for any staff or students who may want to talk with someone.”
