91-year-old man dies from injuries following Maple Ridge crash

A 91-year-old pedestrian involved in a crash while riding his mobility scooter has died.

Police say the man succumbed to his injuries after the incident on Monday, March 9.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. when first responders were called to the intersection of 119 Avenue and 228 Street where the man, who was riding his mobility scooter, and a Hyundai Santa Fe collided.

The senior was taken to hospital in serious condition.

At the time police closed off the intersection and were joined by the Investigative Support Team, and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, for the investigation.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and spoke with police.

Ridge Meadows RCMP say officers are continuing their investigation and proceeding through all the necessary investigative steps.

This is the second fatal pedestrian traffic collision of the year in Maple Ridge.

And, police are still investigating the city’s most recent pedestrian collision that occurred on March 10th at around 7:30 p.m. in the 12200 block of 227th Street.

In this instance a 45-year-old woman was transported to hospital in critical condition.

Police said the pedestrian was crossing the street mid block when they were hit by the SUV that was northbound on 227th Street.

Again, the driver remained at the scene, and cooperated with police.

Anyone with further information in either of these incidents, who have not already spoken to police, or anyone with possible dash-cam footage, are asked to contact Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251 and quote file #2026-4644 for the March 9 incident and file#2026-4727 for the incident on March 10.

No further updates are available at this time, said Insp. Martin Guay with the Ridge Meadows RCMP.

“Ridge Meadows RCMP appreciates the public’s assistance in taking extra precaution on our roadways in light of these two incidents and recent inclement weather. Road safety is a shared responsibility held by everyone,” Guay added.
