Mission Fire Rescue responded to a large structure fire at Chartwell Carrington House on 7th Avenue on Monday night (March 9).
Crews were called to the blaze at the seniors housing complex at about 6 p.m.
According to a notification by the City of Mission, Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources were on scene to respond.
Flames and smoke could be seen rising in the air as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The building was fully engulfed.
Mission RCMP said evacuated residents were taken by bus to Mission Leisure Centre, where a reception centre was established.
The city said its Emergency Support Services (ESS) team is working closely with Fraser Health to ensure that all medical needs of evacuees are being met.
The fire closed 7th Avenue in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street and it was expected to remain closed for much of the night.
Family members coming to meet loved ones were asked to attend the Leisure Centre, not the retirement residence.
At this time, organizers are asking people not to drop off donations at the centre.
Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated.
There has been no official statement regarding any injuries.
More updates will be released as information becomes available.
