Pitt Meadows karate club hosts provincial championships

The Pitt Meadows Shotokan Karate Club hosted the provincial championships on Saturday, with numerous members of the local club winning medals.

The gymnasium at Pitt Meadows secondary was packed for the event, with 162 competitors from across the province and even Washington State, as well as their coaches and family. In three venues there were kids, teens, and adults competing in kumite (sparring) and kata (techniques).

The event is a qualifier for the national championships, being held in Calgary in May.

There were 42 members of the team from the large Pitt Meadows club.

“Everyone competed with grit and determination,” said Sensei Amy-Lyn Shaw. “From the kids who competed for their first time to the seniors who’ve been competing for years, our team left everything they had on the mat. I’m a very proud sensei.”
