Snow potential for Lower Mainland commuters Tuesday, Wednesday morning

There’s the potential for snow during the morning commute Tuesday and Wednesday for Lower Mainland drivers.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Surrey, Langley and the entire Metro Vancouver area, saying a cool, unstable air mass over the South Coast will bring freezing levels to near sea level before Tuesday morning (March 10).

The low freezing levels combined with an approaching trough of low pressure will produce bands of flurries or showers on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 10-11), the federal agency noted.

“Due to the convective nature of the precipitation, snowfall accumulations will be highly variable across the region,” Environment Canada said in the statement. “Although snow may reach sea level, accumulating snowfall is more likely at higher elevations.”

The current forecast guidance indicates the potential for two to five centimetres of snow.

The statement cautioned drivers to allow extra time for their morning commutes on Tuesday and Wednesday, and advised motorists to be prepared to adjust their driving to quickly changing road conditions.
