LETTER: More info needed on cause of Lougheed deaths

Dear Editor,

[RE: Maple Ridge mayor asks for safety measures along deadly stretch of highway, Feb. 18, www.mapleridgenews.com]

There have been calls for action by Maple Ridge Mayor Ruimy and some members of the public for action on the number of pedestrian deaths due to accidents with vehicles in the Laity Street area of Lougheed Highway.

There has been little information on the circumstances of these events and whether there is any action that could have been taken to prevent these deaths.

There are sidewalks and street lights on both sides of the road.

Was the vehicle speeding? Was the driver under the influence or operating their vehicle without due care and attention?

And who were the pedestrians? Were they hit while crossing legally at the stoplight or attempting to cross elsewhere?

Were alcohol or drugs involved? Does the drug injection site nearby have anything to do with it?

The answers to these questions would help determine a solution, if any, that would alleviate this problem.
