RCMP find ‘no credible threat’ to 100 Mile House high school

100 Mile House RCMP officers are maintaining a presence at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School after a safety concern was reported to School District 27.

Hattie Darney, SD 27’s Director of Instruction and Safe Schools Coordinator, said that on Thursday, March 5, a safety concern was reported to the district. Darney said that school staff responded “quickly and appropriately” and followed protocols related to “worrisome behaviour.”

“The RCMP assessed the report promptly and determined there was no credible threat to the school,” Darney said. “As an added measure of reassurance, RCMP officers will maintain a presence at Peter Skene Ogden Secondary throughout the day on March 6. Their visibility is intended to offer added support to students, staff, and families.”

Darney said that the actions taken by staff and the RCMP were guided by an abundance of caution to maintain the safety and well-being of PSO’s school community. She thanked the RCMP for their responsiveness whenever concerns arose in their district.

This incident occurred a little under a month after the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, which claimed the lives of nine, including the shooter.

Anyone who needs support stemming from this incident will receive it, Darney added. She ultimately asked the public to report any behaviour or incident they feel may be a cause for concern.

“Our district remains committed to creating safe, caring, and compassionate learning environments for all,” Darney stated. “We encourage everyone in our school district to speak up when something doesn’t feel right: If you see or hear something, Report It — Don’t Re-post! Please continue to use the online ERASE reporting tool, available on district and school websites, to report worrisome behaviours.”
