Original Abbotsford Canucks defenceman Jett Woo dealt to San Jose

An original member of the Abbotsford Canucks is now heading to California.

The Vancouver Canucks announced on Thursday (March 5) that defenceman Jett Woo has been dealt to the San Jose Barracuda in exchange for defender Jack Thompson.

Woo exits the team as the Abbotsford Canucks franchise-record holder for most games played by a defenceman at 265 and is second for all players behind captain Chase Wouters. He also ranks second in all-time defenceman scoring with 86 points (behind Christian Wolanin) and is the franchise leader in penalty minutes with 392.

The 2018 Canucks second round draft pick was also an important player on the 2025 Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup winning team and recorded six points in 22 playoff games during that run. He also served as an assistant captain in both 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Woo’s last act on the team was scoring the game-winning shootout goal in Abbotsford’s 3-2 win over Calgary on Sunday (March 1). He also played 28 games for the Utica Comets when that club was the Canucks affiliate.

“Jett was a key part of our AHL championship winning team and we would like to thank him for all that he has done for the Canucks organization,” stated Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin on Thursday.

Thompson, a 23-year-old third round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020, is in his third season with the San Jose Barracuda. He’s also played 34 NHL games split between the Lightning and the San Jose Sharks.

Thompson has appeared in 203 career AHL games split between the Barracuda and the Syracuse Crunch. He recorded a career-high 32 points in 46 games for the Crunch in 2023-24 and this season has 12 points in 42 games for the Barracuda. Thompson also won a gold medal with Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship.

“Bringing in Jack will add to our organizational depth on the blueline, and we look forward to working with him in Abbotsford,” Allvin stated.

Vancouver also announced that they called up Abbotsford defenceman Cole Clayton on Thursday. He and defender Victor Mancini will likely remain in Vancouver for the rest of the season.
