Maple Ridge’s Gryphons win first game of provincial championships

The Meadowridge Gryphons won their first game of the senior boys BC High School Provincial Championships tournament.

Competing in the Single A tournament at the Langley Events Centre on Wednesday, March 4, the Gryphons beat Campbell River Christian by a score of 81-67.

The Gryphons are ranked sixth in the tournament, while the Cougars rank 11th.

The Maple Ridge squad was led by Myles Galazka, who scored 25 points and was named the player of the game. Rico Xie also had a great game, with 10 points in the first quarter, and 20 for the game. Ethan Banack scored 13 points.

Meadowridge got off to a slow start, and actually trailed 11-2 early in the game. But their defence kicked in, and they shut down the Cougars during a 27-6 run that gave Ridge a lead they would never give up. They maintained a close 39-36 lead at half time, but never trailed again.

Next the Gryphons will play the third-ranked Vernon Christian Royals, on Thursday evening at 8:45 p.m. at the LEC.

They are the only senior boys basketball team from the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District to qualify for the provincials this season.
