The week of Feb. 22 to 28 is Freedom to Read Week in Canada. This week, created in 1984, is a time to encourage Canadians to think about the intellectual freedom we enjoy in this country, and to consider what that freedom means. While there is the freedom to read in Canada, numerous efforts have been made to pull books from schools and public library shelves, or to have certain titles available but kept out of sight.
Challenged works include books for children, adults and young adults, as well as magazines and comic books and graphic novels. Even Mickey Mouse has come under fire in the past.
Considering the freedom to read may be a difficult topic as it includes some works dealing with uncomfortable subject matter or unpopular opinions.
