Eberle scores 2, leading Kraken to 5-1 win over Vancouver Canucks

Jordan Eberle scored twice, lifting the Seattle Kraken to a 5-1 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks in NHL action Saturday at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

Chandler Stephenson had a goal and two assists for the Kraken (28-22-9), with Vince Dunn and Matty Beniers adding single goals. Joey Daccord earned the win in goal, making 27 saves.

Liam Öhgren had the lone goal for the Canucks (18-33-7), who remain last overall in the league standings. Kevin Lankinen took the netminding loss, stopping 19 of 23 shots.

Dunn opened the scoring 7:36 into the first period, moving in from the left point and firing a shot past Lankinen’s glove, off the goalpost and in for his ninth goal of the year.

Stephenson upped the lead to 2-0 at 10:20. Adam Larsson’s point shot hit a pile of bodies in front of Lankinen and dropped in front of Stephenson, who deposited it for his 14th goal of the season. The Canucks have fallen behind 2-0 on 23 occasions this year.

Shortly thereafter, Stephenson had another glorious chance on a breakaway but he was denied by Lankinen.

Shots after one period favoured the Kraken, 10-9.

Öhgren cut the lead in half 8:28 into the second period. Conor Garland carried the puck into the Kraken zone on the right wing and his cross-ice pass banked off the left boards right to Öhgren, who beat Daccord, with Teddy Blueger causing a distraction in front. Öhgren now has five goals on the year.

Eberle restored the two-goal margin at 13:47, outracing defenceman Elias Pettersson to a loose puck and breaking in to beat Lankinen for his 21st of the season.

Seattle held an 18-17 shots advantage after 40 minutes.

Beniers scored on a power play at 11:56 of the third period. Eberle got the puck down low, then moved in front of the net and appeared to beat Lankinen. Near the end of the game, it was ruled Eberle’s shot went off the toe of Beniers.

Vancouver pulled Lankinen in favour of an extra attacker with five minutes to play. Soon after, Daccord got the puck and fired a shot toward the empty net, but it just missed the right post.

With three minutes to go, Eberle looked to have scored his third of the game into the empty net to round out the scoring, to the delight of the home fans. But the late scoring change denied him the hat trick.

The Canucks host the Dallas Stars Monday (7 p.m.).

NOTES: Vancouver defenceman Tyler Myers took the warmup skate Saturday but sat out the game for ‘roster management’ reasons. The NHL’s trade deadline is March 6… Max Sasson and Aatu Räty were healthy scratches for the Canucks, while Filip Chytil (facial fracture) and Thatcher Demko (hip surgery) sat out with injuries.
