Maple Ridge concert to help women fleeing domestic abuse

To celebrate International Women’s Day, a local band will be holding a special concert in support of Cythera Transition House Society.

Peacenik Collective – featuring the talents of Cherelle Jardine, Marc Gladstone, Scott Jackson, Gord Maxwell, Greg Stuart, and Maple Ridge’s own Bruce Coughlan – will be presenting “Back to Love”, a concert reviving the peace and love movement of the 1960s.

The evening will include uplifting, original songs by the group, in addition to re-imagined classics.

Peacenik Collective was formed in 2023, initially for a peace concert. But, they quickly realized they all shared the same ideals, which led to their single “Back to Love”.

The group strives to be a beacon of hope, reminding people that peace, love, kindness and music still has the power to bring people together.

“This is more than a show … It’s a gathering. A place to connect, reflect, and let the music lift us together,” said the group.

Cythera Transition House Society is an organization that helps women and children fleeing domestic abuse.

In 2023 the society received 846 crisis and support calls on their 24 hour support line. That same year 153 women and children stayed at the transition house where they had access to individual and group counselling services, and 287 women requested services for themselves and/or their children.

International Women’s Day is a global day recognizing the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

The concert will be taking place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, at Golden Ears United Church, 22165 Dewdney Trunk Rd., Maple Ridge.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 plus fees.

Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite.
